Add an Existing File to a Project

You can easily add any existing file to a project. Typically, files added to a project are stored under the file structure of the project, but you can also link to files outside your project. You can even add files that are stored in HPE Application Lifecycle Management.

Browse for the File(s)

A file must always be added to a project at the root level or under a folder. Within the Solution Explorer tool window, select the Project Node to add the file at the root level or a File Folder Node to add the file under a folder. Then select Project -> Add Existing Item... from the main menu. The Add Existing Item dialog will be displayed.

Use the Add Existing Item dialog to navigate to the file(s) you want to add. You can select an individual file to add or select multiple files. You now have the option to add the file(s) directly to the project or link to them.

Directly Add a File

When you click the Add button on the Add Existing Item dialog, the file(s) you selected will be physically copied to the file system of the active folder in the Solution Explorer tool window. This keeps all files related to a project under the root folder.

Note:   If you add a file that was already stored under the active folder but not included in the project, that file will simply be included without copying any data.
Note:   This process does not apply to HPE Application Lifecycle Management files. See below for working with files stored in HPE Application Lifecycle Management.

Link to a File

Instead of clicking the Add button on the Add Existing Item dialog to directly add the files, click the drop-down arrow on the right-side of the button to reveal a popup menu with an additional option. Select the Add as Link option from the menu.

The file(s) will be added to the project without copying the physical files under the project folder. Test Design Studio will use the original location of the files. A linked file in the Solution Explorer tool window will appear with a small 'link' overlay on the icon (i.e. ).

Note:   This process does not apply to HPE Application Lifecycle Management files. See below for working with files stored in HPE Application Lifecycle Management.

Adding a File from Application Lifecycle Management

When you select one or more files from HPE Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) to add to your project, those files are added differently than typical files stored on a file system. When you click the Add button on the Add Existing Item dialog, a local copy of the file will be downloaded to the file system of the active folder in the Solution Explorer tool window, and a link will be established to the file(s) in ALM. Test Design Studio will manage the uploading/downloading of the files to keep them in sync with the server as well as provide additional options when ALM version control is enabled. An ALM file in the Solution Explorer tool window will appear with a faded ALM icon exposed behind it so that you can easily distinguish between local files and those stored in ALM.
